The Rest of the Tour

by

There are exactly two stages left where the field can make time on Bradley Wiggins, Wednesday and Thursday. They are bruisers, and I have done both of them and know the roads well. The Thursday stage is literally insane. Col De Mente is very tough for a cat 1, and they have to also do the totally nuts Port de Bales (HC) and Peyresourde on the way to Peyragudes. Ouchie. I had to stop a couple of times on Bales, it is a beyotch.

I don’t think with the team help that Wiggins has that anyone will do anything against him and then get totally wiped out in the ITT. I will add that when I saw the WHOLE Team Sky up there riding with Wiggins in the front along with a few stragglers from other teams that it reminded me of the good ‘ol US Postal days when the riders were all up there leading Lance around with a few hapless members of other teams trying to keep up. In other words, Team Sky has the best dope this year.

Meanwhile, Frank Schleck failed his dope test. Isn’t that lovely.

The sport is a joke but I still love watching it just as much as the football dopers.

When I was in France I was talking to a guy at the end of my race. I asked him why do the people there cheer and clap and yell for racers like me and others who finish literally hours behind the pros and elite amateurs? He said that it is because all the people on their stoops and in their windows understand that the pro tour and the elites are a sideshow. Entertainment. Fake. They know that you are the real deal. I had to pick up my jaw from the ground but then said, “thanks” and had a moment of clarity. It made me proud to be able to compete the best I could without dope. And fuck the cheaters. They will get what they deserve someday.

Yeah, I just saw that with Schleck:

  2. Sk8 Says:

And the death penalty for Penn State? Let’s hope so:

    • dfm Says:

Well they should get it, but I sorta hope they don’t. If they get the death penalty they will become a stooopid martyr of sorts. And I would really feel sorry for the athletes, who would have to disperse and get jobs…er…enroll in other schools for football.

  3. hot carl Says:

You are one crazy dude to ride up those hills

  4. Sk8 Says:

Ok, watching it live now. 105 Km to go, they are over the 1st HC climb of Col D’aubisque. Now onto the two monsters of the day, Tourmalet and Col d’aspin, booyhay!

  5. Sk8 Says:

Frenchie Thomas Voelcker tearing it up over Tourmalet! I’monna go for that guy today.

    • Sk8 Says:

      Up… And over Tourmalet…

      • Sk8 Says:

I think they usually go the other way up Tourmalet. La Mongie is usually right before the top, not the backside. I know they go clockwise one year around france and the other the next year though…

  6. Sk8 Says:

BMC guys dropping off the back before the summit. Evans gonna need some teammates if he is going to attack Col d’aspin.

  7. Sk8 Says:

Hey, Hinkape up in the chase 1 group with Vinikourof (sp?) aka crazy fucking russian.

  8. Sk8 Says:

Col d’aspin now. Not sure its as brutal up this side, but prolly.

  9. Sk8 Says:

Voelcker kicking it up front with his strange riding style. Seems to work though…

  10. Sk8 Says:

Well, Peloton at the base of Col d’Aspin. If Evans is going to attack, better be soon.

    • Sk8 Says:

And Evans off the back of the Yellow. He’s gonna be lucky to get on the podium this year at all. He is out of form or not doping correctly, or some of bof.

  11. Sk8 Says:

And into the town of Arreau, last summit is a Cat 1.

  12. Sk8 Says:

OK we got some attacks now in the GC back in the Yellow group. Nibali (italian) who is 3rd in the GC 2:23 back. Wiggins and Froome are together in a chase but Nibali has a gap.

  13. Sk8 Says:

And Voelcker just kills this stage. Good for him.

    • dfm Says:

Way to go Froggie Voekler! If things hold tomorrow, Wiggins will put more time into everyone in the ITT and this will be a wipeout of enormous proportions.

      • Sk8 Says:

1:30 over the #2 in this stage, he friggin killed it. By far the best French rider this decade. They call him petite blanc, hah!

  14. Sk8 Says:

Booyah, Stage 17. Last MNT day, got home just in time for the first (and only) HC climb of the day. Uphill finish today on a Cat 1 hill. Should be exciting.

Maybe Nibali can attack and get past Froome, he’s about 20 seconds behind and get into 2nd place. Me thinks Wiggins is pretty safe right now.

  15. Sk8 Says:

Oops, Cavindish in a crash with 53k to go. Looks ok though.

  16. dfm Says:

Dude that HC today the Port de Bales is incredibly difficult. The only climb this year I had to stop and get a breath on.

  17. Sk8 Says:

Peloton only 2 min back with 36KM to go today. No way this breakaway is going to survive. Going to be the race leaders I think today.

    • Sk8 Says:

Jaysus Christmas, actaully Voeckler is up near the front again in Polka Dot. He’s a mountain goat fo sho.

    • Sk8 Says:

Well, maybe. Leader is holding them off with 2:21 and 16km to go. Shall see.

      • Sk8 Says:

Voeckler gets eaten by the peloton. He prolly just wanted the mountain points from the previous mountains anyway. It would be pretty superhuman to win 2 stages in a row.

  18. Sk8 Says:

OMG this downhill is insane! 1lane road, straight drop down the mountain on one side of the road and clouds.

  19. Sk8 Says:

Last climb, looks like Evans is falling off the back again from the groupe yellow…

  20. dfm Says:

On the Bales, some of the grades are 14-18%. The descent was horrifying, you REALLY have to be careful. And when you ascend into the clouds I don’t know how those guys can handle it. We would stop at the top and bundle up for the descent, it gets COLD and if you get too cold you start to shiver – NOT good when you are on your bike going (in my case) 40 mph or in the pros case 50-60 mph. And all they do is put some newspapers on their chest. Craaaazy.

    • Sk8 Says:

2.4 km to go. Froome is slowing down for Wiggins. They look like they left Nabali behind now. Froome needs more space on him for the TT.

    • Sk8 Says:

Yeah, I’ve seen them take a paper at the top of the mountains for the descent. Thats old skool.

    • johnnyj Says:

…Awesome dfm, very cool that you are in good enough shape to do this, I’m sure it’s a good feeling to get props like you mentioned…Maybe I’ll join ya sometime if you put one of those little sidecars on your bike so I can just drink beer and take in the scenery, I’ll heckle all the other bikers and feed ya power bars…

  21. johnnyj Says:

…DFM’s wife’s dog is to blame for this:

…Another awesome new album from Mr.Jackson to wash all ths bike gay away…

  22. Sk8 Says:

    Current Overall Standings:

    http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/cycling/tour-de-france/standings/yellow.html

Froome vs Nibali looks like the only competition for the podium for 2 and 3 spots. I think Froome is pretty good at the TT though, so its prolly baked in the cake at this point.

Of note, US rider Tejay (wtf on the spelling) Gardener is having a nice tour in 5th overall. Dont think he can make a podium spot though…

  23. Sk8 Says:

    Oh, and Gig-i-dee:

  24. Sk8 Says:

Pretty good live feed here of today’s race since I’m not at home to watch it right now:

    http://www.letour.fr/le-tour/2012/us/live/aso/

    • dfm Says:

Cav today, Wiggins still with the 2 minute plus lead. You can put a fork in the field after he kills it in the ITT tomorrow.

      • Sk8 Says:

Holy shit, Cav is unbeatable in a sprint, twice as fast as anybody over that last sprint.

        • dfm Says:

I disagree – there are four or five sprinters that can win on any given day, it just depends on what type of day they are having, what the team strategy is, etc.

  25. Sk8 Says:

ITT isn’t that fun to watch on tv, but it is in person. 2 years ago in Bordeaux we sat 2k into the course drinking wine at a cafe with the list of riders in hand and the family, what a blast and a great opportunity to get pics of your favorite riders. I think I will dig up those pics and send one or two to DFM for the final TDF post. Pretty sur I have wiggins and for sue Lance.

  26. dfm Says:

LL Sanchez with the best time so far, a bit surprising. But still 28 riders left to take off.

  27. dfm Says:

Sagan well off of Sanchez’s time, looks like he will need to work on his ITT if he ever wants to win the Tour.

  28. dfm Says:

TEEJAY 3 seconds ahead of LL Sanchez at the interval sweet.

  29. dfm Says:

Cadel what a disaster. Teejay will be the best placed finisher for BMS this year.

  30. dfm Says:

haha Froome BLOWS Teejay away at the first interval what a joke this TDF is. Can’t wait to see WIggin’s first time.

  31. dfm Says:

And Wiggins up 12 seconds on Froome at the first interval. Team Sky has the good dope this year fo sho.

  32. dfm Says:

On the Tour Tracker they are saying that Cadel has been sick – that might explain his tough tour.

  33. dfm Says:

Holy crap Teejay PASSED Cadel in the tt. Whoa.

    • Sk8 Says:

Damn, if he could work on the mountains thing he would have the full package. You HAVE to be good at the TT thing to be an overall leader and it seems like the track guys (obviously) make that transition best. Not sure if you can “learn” the mountain goat thing though…

  34. dfm Says:

Richie Port from Sky is currently third in the ITT. He will drop but it looks like Sky will have three in the top seven or eight including first and second. Damn.

  35. dfm Says:

Wiggins just crushing it as predicted.

  36. Sk8 Says:

Switching back and forf between the Masters and the TT.

Nibali is getting nowhere on this TT, he’s like a Schleck.

  37. dfm Says:

Nibali defends his podium place. Put a fork in this tour as far as the GC goes, but the fantastic Champs Elysees stage tomorrow is always entertaining.

  38. dfm Says:

JESUS Wiggins AVERAGED 31.07 miles per hour!

  39. Sk8 Says:

Brits are going crazy on the Beebs. Be proud England, he’s a good cyclist (bad teeth, food and atrocious women).

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/18940711

  40. Sk8 Says:

Tiger SURGING after a tough couple of first holes. Sounds like he needs some in-spi-ration!
