Champs-Elysees

by

Well, a good tour, but a wipeout, as far as the GC is concerned. I really liked the route though. Sunday we crown the new champ, and sk9 got a great photo of Wiggo at the ITT in Bordeaux in 2010.

Sky shows they have the best dope this year in a big way. Sunday is one of my favorites, the final stage of the Tour down the Champs-Elysees, a feast for the eyes. I need to not only do this stage, but go to it to watch the Tour someday – it is about as close as track racing as we can get. Which brings up an interesting subject – the Tour used to finish all of their stages on tracks/velodromes. They need to bring that back – hopefully we will see some of that next year in the 100th Tour as a nod to the past.

For the stage, Sk8 has Cav with the incredible Team Sky, and I will take the Gorilla Greipel. I figure Sagan will also have a go at it but we will see as this is a true sprinter stage.

Sent you a 2010 pic of wiggins in the 2nd tt of that tour in Bordeaux for the banner of this thread. I think you said at the time “they overpaid for this guy”, check the tapes.

Hey you can never tell who is going to get the good dope. I will add the photo to this post.

Related, I went out for 40 miles today and practiced my ITT. I could barely get to 30 mph on the flats, much less hold it there like Wiggins did for OVER AN HOUR. That is totally nuts. I am going to watch the replay tonight and will be here for the Champs-Elysees tomorrow.

  2. dfm Says:

Goddam sk8 that is a great photo of Wiggins you should crop it and blow it up as a wall hanging. Shutterfly does this on canvas pretty cheaply.

  3. dfm Says:

Holy hell I just realized that Tom Voelkler is the polka dot. Good for him I like that frog.

    • Sk8 Says:

Yeah, that is great. I think he has 2 Stage wins this tour coming off an injury about a 2 months ago. Most of the time reflexively I wouldn’t go for a Frog, but he’s got real heart. I noticed him first when he got the white jersey about a decade ago, then his dozen odd days in yellow trying to hold of Lance about 6 years ago.

  4. dfm Says:

Wow very cool to watch Wiggo with that elliptical front chainring.

  5. dfm Says:

Out of curiosity I wonder if Wiggo will compete in the Olympics. I doubt he will as the Tour prolly took too much out of him. BUT there are a lot of Brits on Team Sky and they may work for him in the road race.

  6. dfm Says:

What the fuck happened to Fabian Cancellara? Ah, he abandoned to be with his preggo wife, but he will be in London for the Olympics.

  8. dfm Says:

Alright it’s on like donkey kong.

  9. dfm Says:

Jesus the NBC Sports Netork coverage is ridiculous. I am going to stream EuroSport.

    • Sk8 Says:

I got eurosport HD, but the language is wrong. I think its all the same video feed, just different announcers…

      • dfm Says:

I have it with Sean Kelly announcing that doper. He is a pretty good announcer. You are correct it is all one feed but NBC Sports Network puts in WAY too much of the personal profile bullshit and other nonsense and WAY more ads.

    • Sk8 Says:

Sent a couple of more pics as well…

  10. dfm Says:

Voekler in the polka dots, good for him!

  11. dfm Says:

they just said that instead of the traditional winning team (Sky) coming onto the Champs Elysees first that they might let Hincapie do it in honor of his 17th tour – yet another doper.

  12. dfm Says:

haha I have the NBC Network on TV and the stream on my laptop – Paul and Phil keep saying that the action will heat up as they get nearer Paris trying to keep American viewers interested.

  13. dfm Says:

Gawd profile of Cadel Evans on NBC Sports Network – come on man…

    • Sk8 Says:

They were talking about him and Teejay last night about the TDF next year. Said it may be good to have the mentor of Evans on the team for Teejay as the head rider.

Don’t know if you noticed, but Teejay passed Cadel yday on the ITT… Ouch.

  14. dfm Says:

ah Sky organizing for the traditional team photo

  15. Sk8 Says:

JOPA statue coming down today. Man what a fall from grace, ol Bobby Bowden has to be chuckling, er belly laughing:

  16. dfm Says:

EuropeCar has a changing of the guard too I think from Voelkler to Pierre Rolland soon.

  17. Sk8 Says:

OK, so over to the Open till they get to Paris.

  18. Sk8 Says:

Uh oh, it all goes down tomorrow for PSU, and Drudge says its gonna go really badly:

    • dfm Says:

d’oh – I do feel sorry for the players who have to scramble for new schools now after they announce the death penalty. Funny comment at that article, says that nobody is complaining about strippers and tattoos now lol…

  19. Sk8 Says:

OK, heading into the city, can’t wait to see the obelisk thingy the French stole from Egypt (and then put gold on it, to say suck it Arabs).

  20. dfm Says:

Alright its on and they let Hincapie lead them. Nice gesture for his last tour.

  21. dfm Says:

Jens Voight up front now, I love that guy.

  22. dfm Says:

I just saw a BMC rider that had gauze on almost every square inch of his body. Tough tour for him, poor bastard.

  23. Sk8 Says:

Blah ha! Tiger chokes in a bunker and injures himself.

Man, post porn-stars its been rough.

    • dfm Says:

haha did he have to withdraw?

      • Sk8 Says:

No, he is still hangin. But after this f-d up bunker shot he was limping badly. He has bad knees and achilles.

    • Sk8 Says:

Oh, kickass, can watch the TDF and the British Open at the same time.

I have the Sony bravia and can watch bof even though they are different signal types, one euro, one US. That is a dope TV.

  24. Sk8 Says:

Really, do they think a breakaway is going to make it today? Although I do remember (hearing about) Greg Lemond winning it on the last day, to everyone’s surprise….

  25. dfm Says:

I wonder what would happen if Wiggins crashed. Would Nibali/Froome go for it or do the gentlemanly thing?

  26. dfm Says:

Sagan already in Cav’s wheel. This is gonna be good.

  27. Sk8 Says:

Actually doesn’t look THAT packed on the Champs. Might be fun to go there for the final day of the tour one day. Cause if you go to a normal day, its over in 30 seconds, and at least on this stage you get to see them go by 10(?) times or so…

  28. dfm Says:

    captain america up front!

  29. dfm Says:

alright two laps left time to get serious

  30. dfm Says:

liquigas forming up front for Sagan

  31. Sk8 Says:

Man, from 22 to 15 seconds with the peloton chasing in NO time at all.

  32. dfm Says:

here comes lotto fuck yea Greipel!

  33. dfm Says:

saxo up front EVERYBODY is going for it!

  34. Sk8 Says:

CRASH YO! Lucky the yellow stays up front, huh?

  35. dfm Says:

    oh nasty crash

  36. Sk8 Says:

    Come on CAV!

  37. dfm Says:

    farrar up there

  38. dfm Says:

what a day and what a tour for Sky.

    • Sk8 Says:

More dominant than ANY of Lance’s teams (postal, ect). Totally kicked ass in every aspect.

      • dfm Says:

yea it was an ass pounding. I don’t know if they were more dominant than some of the US Postal teams but certainly right there.

  39. Sk8 Says:

Alright, so tomorrow its in the NYT that Wiggins tests positive as a doper. Perfect end to the TDF.

  40. dfm Says:

whatever happened to the god of thunder I wonder…Gilbert fell way off this year too.

  41. dfm Says:

Nice interview with Cadel but fuck him it needs to be all about TJ next year.

  42. Sk8 Says:

I was just looking through the last winners of the yellow, green, polka:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Tour_de_France_winners

Robbie McEwen was pretty badass at the sprints…

  43. dfm Says:

    podium girls fuck yea

  44. Sk8 Says:

Cav going for it in the Olympics, he says.

Man, some Barry Bonds looking dude on the French feed, not good guys…

  45. dfm Says:

TJ fuck yea! Eurosport will have the Olympic road race so that is cool I will stream that fo sho next saturday. I imagine a lot of the guys here will be too gassed to compete in that.

  46. Sk8 Says:

Vinikorov! I like that guy. Total balls to the wall till he explodes, which he mostly does…

  47. dfm Says:

What the hell no cup for Wiggins just the stupid stuffed lion and flowers? Odd.

    Ok I am out sk8.

  48. Sk8 Says:

OMG, that rendition of God Save the Queen was HORRIBLE! Fuck.

  49. dfm Says:

    “Don’t get too drunk” lol

  50. dfm Says:

Holy hell I just read that after the NCAA comes down with the hammer tomorrow the Big Televen might vote to BOOT JoPa out. Nothing firm yet but I guess it is on the table. Yoikes. Not sure how I feel about that.

On one hand, I want to beat the shit out of them for the next decade but on the other hand what a bunch of fucks. And Penn State was never a “traditional” Big Ten team to me anyway, pretty far out of my preferred geographical profile.
