Here is our yearly draft open thread! The weather is supposed to FINALLY be nice this weekend, so I will probably be pretty scarce outside of the first round Thursday night.  It is in Chicago this year, so we may see some decent jackassery while we are at it.

    Been a while

  18. astro Says:

By the time I found the Misfits it was almost 4 years after the original Earth AD album, and the one I got had the extra tracks, like this:

  19. astro Says:

It makes sense now, but I never realized where Danzig started from. For example, listen to this:

  20. astro Says:

If that had come out 20 years later (minus the cheery kill your baby and rape your mother lines), it would have nailed the Ska genre that had a brief but furiously huge fanbase. I was one of them, I’d know. From 1997, check it:

  21. astro Says:

DHC had the awesome chick harmony, but the song structure and beat matches. Maybe Danzig was Ska before it was a (brief) thing.

But now we’re talking about DHC.

  22. astro Says:

They goofed on the beats, but did so awesomely. I still think of DHC as now, but that album came out in 1995.

That’s 20 years ago. Is this really old?

  23. astro Says:

I guess since I can count the pixels I should know.

There’s a guy named Bruce who does a local carwash around here. By local, I mean he does it where you are parked. He comes around to our company once a week usually, and for 20 bucks he washes your car, vacuums, and armor-alls everything that needs it. For $40, he’ll give it a hand wax. He doesn’t plug in – his beatup old van with Spongebob on the side carries everything he needs, including water.

Last week he got five of our cars and was doing it assembly line style. I had asked him to do mine first since I had to leave early. As I was walking out to my car I heard the beat blasting out from the spongebob van and shooped a little as I walked to my car.

Is this song really 20 years old?

  24. astro Says:

She hit me in all the places that I tried to fill with Xena years later. You know, the bow-legged one. At least Vevo preserved this one well.

20 years ago is a generation. A lifetime. Do we have that brief a time to be a part of it?

When I was a little kid in the 70s, my parents were big into hippie music. I remember Sgt Pepper, and MacArthur Park. Also the Mamas and the Papas.

Looking at it now, I can’t hear the music, or see the deft feet. All I think is “Ham Sandwich”. That’s sad, because they were really talented. Simon and Garfunkel was another one from my childhood.

  25. astro Says:

Simon and Garfunkel has held up well, even 45 years later. Still one of my favorites:

  26. astro Says:

I remember when I was a kid, my Mom told us that when she died, she wanted this song to be played at her funeral. This was the version she meant, recorded in 1968.

As the years went by, I remembered this. I brought it up recently, and she was very hostile to the idea. No! Do not play that song at my funeral.

She told us about it in the late 70’s or early 80’s, since I remember it. I didn’t ask why she changed her mind. It didn’t seem appropriate. I wonder why the change of mind, but I won’t ask.

  27. astro Says:

I clearly remember a childhood moment during a hot summer, when I was tossing hay bales to my brother. I was in the bed of the truck, and he was in the second story of the barn. I’d grab the bale, bump it on my knee, and launch it up. Over and over again, until the bed was empty. Some of my lifts weren’t the strongest, but he was and we didn’t drop a bale. Just getting the job done without arguing or hitting each other, which was rare. I was probably about ready to enter high school, and he was at the age where it was embarrassing to ask why he got kicked out of college.

I know we were working for hours, but I swear this song was playing the whole time:

  28. astro Says:

I’ve spoken maybe ten words with my brother over the last ten years. That song hits me sometimes. But no one else would know why, or even care. Maybe it’s something like that with my Mom and MacArthur Park. So I get it, and don’t ask questions.

I also never asked questions about this song, which I first heard in 2003 at Coachella:

  29. astro Says:

I think that was the last year I was in touch with music. Dougy Fresh was still alive then, when SK8 and Crystal would bring him around.

We were already slipping behind the times then, though. Yearning for the days of Yes, or the Pixies.

I remember almost ten years ago now, when I first heard Land of Talk and tried to force them on my remaining friends:

  30. astro Says:

But nobody cared anymore. We got too old.

All that is left is to bring up the old songs we all liked together. Every now and then, maybe you can slip in one that meant a lot to you but slipped by them at the time.

    Roll some Iron Maiden, DFM.
